Ceramics is a Fine Art elective of one semester or 1/2 credit
Goals
Students will:
Observe demonstrations on each project method.
Acquire experiential knowledge of clay and its potentials.
Combine aesthetic and functional decision making.
Develop creative critical thinking skills through problem solving.
Become Aware of other ceramic artists and styles.
Understand and use ceramic terms and language.
Enjoy a supportive and relaxing atmosphere for creative expression in clay.
Objectives
Upon successful completion of the class students will be able to:
• Identify at least 3 stages of clay
• Wedge clay using two different methods.
• Make a coil vessel, slab construction and pinch pot
• Produce at least three types of textures in clay.
• Translate a 2 dimensional drawing into a 3 dimensional shape.
• Write reflectively about clay experience in terms of problems encountered and solved, risks taken, discoveries made and successes.
Assignments
Will be demonstrated, described, written and reviewed throughout the process.
Evaluation
Students receive numbered rubrics that assess specific dimensions of the assignment.
Grades will be based on:
• Following directions (acquiring information)- listening, watching and understanding, cleaning up and using time wisely.
• Craftspersonship (action and execution) - using material efficiently, not sloppy or careless, effort, pride in work and good presentation.
• Aesthetics (authentic interpretation) - original individual viewpoint, creative problem solving and critical thinking, balance and unity, thought provoking or pleasing.
Students are not permitted to work on other schoolwork in ceramics class. To do so will result in a 10% penalty on the assignment per incident.
There will be one test over the ceramic terms and a reflective written form that must be filled out upon the completion of each assignment.
